The tradition of the Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church dates back to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed the first Holy Year. Since then, Jubilees have been celebrated approximately every 25 years, allowing each generation the opportunity to experience this time of special grace.

Biblical Roots
The concept of Jubilee has its roots in the Old Testament, where God commanded that every 50 years be declared a jubilee year - a time of liberty, restoration of property, and forgiveness of debts.
- 2
Holy Door
The opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica is one of the central rites of the Jubilee. Passing through this door symbolizes the passage from sin to grace.

Pilgrims who fulfill certain conditions during the Jubilee Year can receive a plenary indulgence, or the remission of temporal punishment due to sin.
